The beginning
Of conscience
is the ending of dreams.
Aren't dreams the substance
Which reality is made of?
Rather, we breathe in brilliant
Colors we have never dreamed.

What does it mean to dream?

I might change the last line to

What does it mean, to dream?

It seems like it would flow better than a conjunction. Otherwise, I like it!

I'm LOVED. Not just liked- passionately, ardently, ADORED with wild, reckless, selfless abandon. Jesus is so crazy about me that it overwhelms me every time I think about it. And believe me, His Love makes all the difference in the world.

My favorite so far~! Though I think ~DaughterofZion brings up a kind of good point, the contraction doesn't flow as well...

Looking forward to the next one, but this is wonderful~! I'm a dreamer, though, so of course i'd love it. ^^

But it's not a contraction. "What does it mean, to dream?" doesn't make sense. I could reword it to be "What does it mean to perform the action of dreaming?" but that sounds clunky, and has the same problem you are describing.

There is a natural pause between mean and to, but we don't actually transcribe that with a comma. At least, not in literary English papers (as I am told my my professor a lot because I over use the comma)

A birthday is just a day, you say.
But it's a special day.
It's the day you first changed the world.

I think "What does it mean, to dream" makes sense... I mean, it's the same thing as "what's it mean" I get the pause, but I think it would still work either way... I dunno, I guess I just see things differently.

Maybe. But either way, I don't like the comma there, since "to dream" is the subject of the question.

What does it mean, to dream? to me means you're asking the question "What's it mean?" where it is not defined...

What I wrote can be re-written as "What does dreaming mean?" But I like the other form better.

To me it sounds like they're asking the same question, which is also "what does dreaming mean?" so I got your meaning. I guess I just think it works and - to me - means the same thing written both ways... I dunno.

It means the same thing, but I think that adding the comma makes it awkward.

And I wrote it, so the comma is not being added. Thanks for the input though :)

The comma seems to add more pause to where there already is a natural pause. Commas are meant to represent the break in idea, not in where we take a breath.

Oh, I didn't think you should add the comma, I just thought you should have it "what does" and not "what's" X3 But yes, it is your poem.
