Apophysis is a fractal generation program. It uses discreet functions and mathematics to render images based on inputs. It's not like "math" that your thinking, but you have "triangles" and morphs you can move around and perform to create a look you think is good. Then you apply a gradient color scheme over the top. I just use the image editing program to touch it up and a few other things
